Murthy Megavan’s life is a continuous weave between his love of the ocean and his desire to grow his community. Both are joined and indivisible for him. The ocean and its waves, tides, colors and currents are in Murthy’s blood since he started fishing when he was 10 years old, joining his uncle and grandfather. Surfing came as a fortunate encounter with a tall foreigner holding a board at the village beach, in 2001. The next time Murthy met Surfing Swami, impressed him by bringing a bunch of well-trained village boys to the Mahabs Surf competition. It was 2004 and since then Murthy never stopped teaching Surfing.
From 2005 to 2012 Murthy passionately worked in Banyan NGO, helping mentally ill people and leading the set-up of the Banyan branch in Kovalam village, while continued surfing, teaching young boys and fishing. On October 2012, next to the beach where he first surfed 11 years before, Murthy culminated the dream of opening the first Surfing School. Yotam Agam, another fortunate encounter at the beach, supported Murthy’s journey alone those years.

Multiple activities have been driven by Murthy for the development of the local community; Health camps, beach cleaning, assistance on floods, support to education, free classes to disadvantaged family kids, … and opportunities arose for the village; Championships, awards, surf trips, quality employment, sustainable tourism, etc.
Murthy is the first surfer of Kovalam, one of the pioneers of the east coast of India, the main driver of the current surfing community around Chennai and the most experienced surf instructor of the region, but most of all is a model of correctness and holding on the foundational values of a Surf School for the Community. Murthy’s motto has not changed; No Drink, No Smoke, Only Surf, Live is Good” , and Murthy Surf School is the culmination of his more than 20 years of hard work.
